Despamming can be quite addictive

Maybe this is kinda weird, but sometimes I do find despamming quite addictive. Today I am despamming one of our wikis at work. I know I don’t have to do this alone/myself, I know I should spend my time on other stuff like actually looking for a better anti-spam plugin or researching for other solutions. But somehow the exercise of copying and pasting the wiki username and reverting the changes the spammers made gave me a weird sense of security.

It’s like when you see something messy and you just can’t resist cleaning it up. The only other web-related experience I can relate to is cleaning up my gmail inbox. Gmail gives me so much space that I don’t need to worry about storage, but I hate it when I see many pages of mail. So, one time I just kinda spent 2 hours or so to archive and actually label all my mail (mind you, most of them are newsletters from the gazillion things I signed up for online and many of them are registration emails from the same gazillion things ;-) ). Despamming feels like that, but this is even better because I am actually purging a bunch of junk from the database.

Oh yeah, it feels gooooood!
